Elise DuQuette is a productivity and goal achievement coach for creatives – who also happens to be an actor, producer, wedding coordinator, and all around multi-tasking, organizational guru! She’s an Aquarius Sun, Aries Rising and Gemini Moon. She loves astrology, tarot, psychology and all things that can be used as tools to learn more about the world around her and the human experience.
She’s a shining example of someone who is a doer and has had a number of types of jobs (including being a mime, catering, working on a construction site, etc). Elise lives her life in a way that allows her to explore and pivot as opportunities come her way. Something I love about her story is that she is excellent at just saying yes walking through the doors that open as she’s moving towards her goals.
We discuss ending the burnout cycle and how Elise had to shift what success, goal setting and productivity meant to her. Toxic productivity is a very real thing that can lead you to being less productive and completely exhausted. We chat about how burn out manifests physically in our bodies, the approach to rest, and ways to care for yourself while still achieving your goals. It’s important to find out what kind of rest you need to fully recover because rest is actually productive.
“The cycle of burnout and glorifying toxic productivity is not sustainable.”
Elise blew my mind with the concept of productivity styles because I’m a lover of personality profiles. Here’s the list:
- Prioritizer – Not interested in the details – wants to get things done in the least amount of steps
- Planner – Wants the details, spreadsheet, wants to know everything that can possibly happen on the journey.
- Arranger – Emotional – wants to do things they feel called to do.
- Visualizer – Spontaneous and impulsive person who has great ideas and has strategic thoughts. Operates off of a vague outline.
Based off of the descriptions, I would say my dominant type is the Visualizer & my secondary is the Arranger. I’ve learned the skills of the Planner along the way, which makes it possible for me to execute things I set out to do, but it’s not my natural way of operating. I’m FASCINATED by this!
Elise also presented the idea of negotiating with your expectations. We create ideas in our mind on how something is going to go and that creates disappointment but when we negotiate with ourselves, we can dig down to what the need is and find other ways to that need. Modify the end, the how, leave room for flexibility.
Radical Acceptance is what helps Elise stay authentic. Accepting all parts of you. The need to rest, knowing what you’re good at, and doing small things to move forward as you’re accepting where you are and who you are. It’s self love in the highest degree.
“The most authentic you can be is to live your life with radical acceptance and with that you’re giving yourself grace.”
Radical acceptance is a lifelong journey, so give yourself grace while doing the work. Know that you never arrive at the “destination,” but instead, focus on what is within your control while honoring where you are on the path.
