Ikea Makeup Vanity Tutorial

Ikea Vanity Hack | Lesa WilsonHave you ever wished for more space to store your makeup? If so, this Ikea hack is for you. Not only does it give you a sexy vanity space but the glass top allows you to see the placement of every piece of makeup you own! No more digging through a makeup bag for your foundation or blush. Special thanks to msTapioca for this fab idea! **NOTE** The video displays the small shelf being used to create this vanity. The larger shelf is more stable. The Atlanta Ikea was sold out of the large shelf at the time of this post.

The items you will need are:

Ekby Gruvan Shelf – There are 2 sizes to choose from: 31 1/8″x 7 1/2″ for $29.99 or 46 7/8×11″ for $39.99.

4 Legs of your choice. A good choice is 4 Adils legs $3.50 each. The screws that come with the legs are too long and will go through the shelf so you need to go to the “Missing A Part” area at Ikea, find the screws numbered 108458 & take 20 of them (5 for each leg).

1 Mirror of your choice. The Kolja line is good for high humidity places like a bathroom so that’s what I chose. $9.99

1 Stool of your choice. The Nils stool allows you to change out the cover making it a great option. $44.99

1 Container for brushes if you want to keep them on top of the vanity.

The stool is from Guitar Center. It was the one I had with my keyboard.

Do you know what the vanity is called? When I go ikea website and type in vanity I can’t find it. Is it actually used for a different purpose??

It’s a shelf that was made into the vanity with 4 of the table legs they have in their office section. I can’t remember the name of the shelf off hand. It comes in 2 sizes. The mirror was one of their $10 mirrors.

Wonderful idea, found the shelf and legs on ideas website. Was it easy to attach the legs? Is it sturdy?

    • Lisa Ritter
      January 30, 2013 at 2:37 am (2 years ago)

Yeah it’s a sturdy set up. We used a power drill to start the screw holes for the legs and it was a piece of cake once we did that.

Hi, loved this so much that I made one myself. I’m just having trouble finding any bins or
Trays small enough to fit. Where did you get yours?

Fabulous! I’m so glad you made one. It’s a great table. I found the trays at Michaels but had to really dig. I made 3 trips there before finding the ones I have. You will have some luck at Hobby Lobby too.

It only comes in white and black. You could always paint them though. :)

Did you use the screws that came with the table legs? I tried this last night and the screws that came the legs went through the shelf itself.

    • Lisa Ritter
      February 12, 2013 at 11:58 pm (1 year ago)

No. I measured the screws because I was afraid they would go straight through too. They were definitely too long so I ended up using some random screws I had in my tool box. They were short and worked perfectly.

I saw this on Pinterest, showed it to my boyfriend saying ‘see, this is what I want. It’s perfect!’ I’m now waiting on my shipment to arrive! How big are your bins? If there was trouble finding them, I’m going to start looking now! I have a ton of make up, so I like that there is storage on top as well as in the shelf/table top!

The bins are not tall, maybe 2 inches. I found them at Michael’s. Enjoy the project! I love my table. It’s awesome. Such a great space to get beautified in the morning. :)

I can’t wait to start this project! I have a quick question though. I know the shelf comes in two sizes; did you use the smaller one or the larger? Thanks!

    • Lisa Ritter
      March 4, 2013 at 3:33 am (1 year ago)

I used the smaller one due to the space limitations in my house. The big one would be amazing! Have fun building your beauty station.

Do you know what size screws would be acceptable I bought everything you used just kind of nervous to assemble the legs to the shelf

      March 10, 2013 at 3:40 am (1 year ago)

I just measured it against the edge of the shelf. I don’t know the length of the screws. Just line the screws up against the edge and make sure they aren’t long enough to pierce through. Make sure to factor in the leg base as well.

I just bought the table/shelf and some pink legs I found at ikea but can’t figure out how to screw them in the table what legs are they exactly that u got?

    • Lisa Ritter
      March 10, 2013 at 3:44 am (1 year ago)

For the project you’ll need four Vika Curry legs & an Ekby Gruvan shelf. The screws that come with the legs are too long for the shelf so you will want to find shorter ones so the don’t go through the shelf. You will have to make your own holes for the screws since this is an Ikea hack.

I don’t know the height off hand but I’m going to update this with a full tutorial answering all the questions I’m getting here. I will post that ASAP! :)

Do you think the shelf is sturdy enough to not use legs?

    • Lisa Ritter
      March 23, 2013 at 12:04 am (1 year ago)

Yes if you mount it really well into the wall. Use anchors!

Another poster mentioned securing it to the wall as a floating vanity. I think that’s a great idea. You can also go to ikea and just pick out a set of legs that you like. They sell tons of options.

The legs should be available at ikea or on their website. If not, just select another set of legs you like. I am going to update this post in the next couple weeks answering all the posts here in more detail to make it easier for everyone to make it.

The shelf is actually called the “EKBY GRUVAN” shelf and you can actually buy matching brackets (matching ones are EKBY VALTER or EKBY MANS) instead of legs which makes it look like it’s floating! The shelf comes in two sizes. The longer one couldn’t fit in my space but the shorter one works just as well and with no legs on it, I’m not banging my knees into the legs like I tend to do at work!? Thanks for the great idea Lisa!

This is awesome! Could you give me a few dimensions? I’m wondering what the thickness of the glass is, what the height of the shelf portion is and what the interior height of the shelf is. Thx!!

What a cute idea! You can find table legs at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Most of them are unfinished wood, but you can paint them as a pop of color!

This is brilliant!! You have absolutely inspired me! I have been searching for a way to have my own little vanity space while sharing a small bedroom with my husband in a community living house situation. That is not an easy thing to figure out! I think this will fit in just beautifully and make me feel so special. Thanks for the fabulous tutorial (video is super helpful :) ).

    Hi Lisa,
Just finished making a floating shelf. I bought the small size too, because space was limited. Got really cute IKEA brackets. Love the way it looks. Even my daughter liked it. Thanks for the great idea!!! :)
